ConductorMy experience of conducting choirs began when I was at university. The Exeter University Singers were an excellent chamber choir conducted by an inspirational man named Donald James; he opened my eyes to the wealth of repertoire and the standards that could be achieved in choral singing. I started my own chamber choir which gave many concerts including performances of the Bach B minor mass, Frank Martin Mass, and Duruflé Requiem as well as Howells Take him earth for cherishing, Bax This Worldes Joie and Mater Ora filium. This choir recorded a programme for BBC Radio 3; all this before I was 20 years old.
I have further developed my skills through my membership of several excellent chamber choirs including The Joyful Company of Singers under Peter Broadbent and the Exon Singers under Christopher Tolley, Andrew Carwood and Matthew Owens. My experience as a Cathedral Lay Clerk across many years working with Barry Rose, Andrew Lucas, David Hill, Andrew Lumsden, Simon Lole and David Halls have helped to shape my own ideas about choir training. I have also worked closely with Hilary Jones in her role as vocal consultant to the Salisbury Choristers. |
